Nokia - E70 Review

E70

12th October 2005

Appearances can be deceptive, and that's certainly tue with the Nokia E70. At first glance, this looks like an enhanced version of the Nokia 6822, but in fact the E70 is much more closely related to handsets such as the Nokia N90 and N91. This is perhaps the long rumoured ''Nokia 6830''.

The Nokie E70 is a 3G device, running the Symbian Series 60 OS, and it also features WiFi connectivity. Although the E70 is part of Nokia's business-orientated ''E series'' of devices, it breaks with the camera-less E60 and E61 by including a 2 megapixel digital camera. As with the N90, there's a high density 352x416 pixel display and expandable memory. The Nokia E70 also comes with a miniSD memory expansion slot and Blueooth. The E70's WiFi connection supports 802.11g, 802.11i and 802.11e protocols and it can also be used to make VOIP calls (voice over IP). In addition, the E70 has tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900) and GPRS.

Of course, that QWERTY keyboard is designed for messaging, and the Nokia E70 supports standard internet email protocols (POP3/IMAP/SMTP), plus additonal third party software such as Blackberry and Visto clients. Users of the E70 can view most types of Microsoft Office document, and even make alterations, plus there's a PDF reader. The inbuilt web browser switches between landscape and portrait modes, but although the 355x416 pixel display has a lot of pixels, it's actually a very high density display and physically a lot smaller than (say) the Nokia E61. There's a multimedia player too, and the E70's 3G features mean that you can also download streaming multimedia directly to the handset.
