he latest addition to Nokia's range of rugged phones arrives with an unusually stylish splash and dust resistant exterior, an integrated 3D accelerometer, text-to-speech technology and music playback.

Having traditionally favoured flashy colours over fashion, Nokia's latest addition to its series of rugged phones has gained a member which finally manages to merge splash and dust resistance with good-looking appearances in the 5500. Powered by the company's S60 platform, the tri-band GSM handset sports three modes, among which the excercise mode takes advantage of a built-in 3D accelerometer and software to displays training data, speed and distance, steps taken, and calories burned.

In addition to a standard phone mode, the handset also boasts a music mode which supports MP3 and WMA formats and relies on a microSD card expansion slot for storing tunes. Other features include text-to-speech technology for reading messages out loud whilst excercising, as well as speaker independent voice dialing, a 2 Megapixel camera, stereo FM radio, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR and EDGE.

The Nokia 5500 Sport is slated for availability across Europe in the third quarter of 2006, and is expected to retail in the 300 Euros range.
