Bought the game again. This time a proper boxed one that was 'new' and cheap.
Might give the old one to a relative's son along with a regular 2DS...
Though this game may be a tad too hard for such a young player.

Just popped this sucker in to my NEW 2DS XL and the save said 16 hours played and it was in the middle of a battle. Obviously died like a beetch lol *
