The progression is the issue tho. Ppl will listen and buy a i5 on your suggestion to play on for 5 years but will have issues in the next 2 years because the industry is moving forward. The ryzen parts will do just fine when the shift comes. Mentioning the amount of threads is useless i could say a xeon with 24 cores cant beat a i3 in counter strike and that is the same kind of false comparison. They won't have issues though. Tests prove once again Ryzen isn't much of a gaming CPU. 8 threads is really as many as you need for nearly every game.
