They wouldn't, only people who are too lazy and don't care about a name. The kind of people who forget names and they're the ones who think themselves of too much importance to remember a name so they shorten it.
Them people would be too self centred and Serenity would see that and try not to mix with them people, she'd only mix with the people who callled her Serenity because they'd be genuine and care about her and not just brush her off with a silly syllable name change.
