Ponting was given a guard of honour when he made his way to the crease, with Proteas captain Graeme Smith lining his players up before warmly shaking Ponting's hand. Ponting faced 23 deliveries for his eight runs and was part of a 21-run partnership with Ed Cowan, but never looked entirely comfortable. Once he was dismissed, most of South Africa's players ran over to him to shake his hand.
