All tanks are the way to go. Each tank is critical to a game. Light tanks scout the battlefield to help spot tanks for the team. And you do get points for spotting and when tanks you've spot are damaged by team members. Medium tanks play a support role, heavies go in to keep other heavies occupied. Tank destroyers can also do the same, but some are better off snipping from behind a bush. Artillery tanks are also for support, but they rely on other tanks to spot targets.
I suggest experimenting with each class.Got to say I prefer the heavy English tanks, the Churchill VII being my favourite. Though I do like spotting in a nice fast light tank, and causing havoc with the enemy artillery
