Everything is backed up prior to the firmware update, then restored afterwards as part of the process of upgrading so to answer your question, Yes. You dont need a Blackberry account to be able to do the update. Word of advice though is to manually create your own backup of the device before attempting any firmware updates, because if something goes wrong when its updating, you loose the backup...
