If you dont know what you are doing but still want to do it yourself then get a manual or copy that section from the manual in a library. Here is my understandsing of your problem. If you are topping it up regularly then you have a leak somewhere. Check your entire system, all calipers, drums, master cylinder, and pipes for any leaks. Look for wet patches on the under your car.
