Stop the presses It turns out that mpv is in fact better than MPlayer WHEN it comes to displaying styled/advanced subtitles and fonts.

and one can easily swap mplayer to mpv in portable SMPlayer

I personally recommend using 2 portable builds of SMPlayer with mplayer in one and mpv in the other

too long did not read = mpv seems to be on par with MPC-HC now. Try it! * +

PS. SMPlayer comes with an ugly skin by default. I recommend changing it to 'Gonzo' (or whatever you like) ASAP.
Also there is another GUI for mpv called baka mplayer.
