if i get windows 10, what happens to my windows 8.1? can i use it on another pc

No. The key will most likely be voided. You will need to check whether it is worth it to upgrade and if the new license will be tied to the PC you activate Win 10 on. * +

Microsoft user agreement states that the copy of Windows you bought is just a license to use it on the PC you originally installed it on.
But in real life, they have no problem with you using it on another PC at your home. But if you take it to work and tell your boss to use it on the company computers, you will owe Microsoft your first born. Blink3.gif

OEM keys and retail keys have different licenses. Retail keys mean you can transfer your license to other PC's whenever you like. OEM is tied to the PC you first install it on. * +

It has not ended, I just downloaded some updates that I forgot to check for last week.

''Windows 7 is still supported by the company and will continue to receive security updates for at least another five years, i.e. until Jan. 14, 2020.''

But pretty much all other support for consumers has ended. No new features etc... I would guess that as time goes on, less and less hardware manufactures will be releasing drivers for Win 7, and same with software companies and checking compatibility. Win 7 will be dead in 5 years. * +

The good news is that both Win 7 and Win 8 users will qualify for a free upgrade to Win 10 hurray.gif. You will have to upgrade within the first year of Win 10 release date, to get Win 10 for free, otherwise you will have to pay for the upgrade. * +

I bet MS wont even bother checking for pirated versions of Win 7, like they didn't with the Win 8 upgrade offer, so it looks like there will be millions of people getting a free copy of Win 10. * +
