vlc for the win as it allows me to stream rtmp streams which is cool.
with media player classic you cant pipe rtmp streams directly to it.

MPC has awesome codecs, however there are some audio files which it cannot play. Vlc plays such audios but has a lag when it comes to video decoding. Has anyone experience such a lag? * +

Vlc is so popular. I think this contributes to its dominance in the media player world. * +

Also note that the codec pools come from projects such as FFMPEG, LIBAV etc. tea2.gif * +

MPlayer still beats ALL other FOSS players.
Portable, 64-bit and with HEVC support thumb_up.gif.
It does however need a GUI (= SMPlayer Portable)
Some people will swear loyalty to mpv (formerly known as mplayer2)

Latest versions on Windows:

Been using MPlayer both on Linux and Windows since 2007. lover.gif * +

VLC doesn't even update often enough. Last update was in April. That's a security risk right there. dont.gif MPC-HC last updated their stable build in June.
SMPlayer and MPlayer current versions are 29.09.2015. redalert.gif * +
