During this years GDC, Microsoft has unveiled its latest DirectX API, DX12. DX12 will be a faster API than its predecessors, and will let developers create more complex scenes. This new API will work across all Microsoft platforms, and will be supported by excellent tools.

DX12 will come with new rendering features, a lower level of abstraction than ever before, resource management improvements and will address state and rendering overhead.

The first application that will take advantage of DX12 will be Futuremarks 3DMark.

As Microsoft noted, the CPU performance has not improved at the same rate during these past years compared to the GPU performance. This difference rate of increase is a big challenge for the DX API, which is why MS is bringing this new API.

DX12 will be better optimized for multi-CPUs. As we all knew, in DX11 one core was doing most of the work. In DX12, however, the overall CPU utilization will be down 50(pc) and the workload will be more spread out.

Q: Should I wait to buy a new PC or GPU?
A: No if you buy a PC with supported graphics hardware (over 80 of gamer PCs currently being sold), youll be able to enjoy all the power of DirectX 12 games as soon as they are available.

Q: When will I be able to get my hands on DirectX 12?
A: We are targeting Holiday 2015 games.

- NVIDIA will support DX12 on Fermi, Kepler, Maxwell and forward.

- Targeting December 2015 games.

- Early access coming this year.

- Windows 7 support seems to currently be a question mark.

I think they have been forced to do something. You have Mantle and Valve driving PC gaming into the future at the moment, MS could lose a significant part of Windows users, several years down the line, if they did nothing. * +

It's pretty meaningless right now. 18 months til the hard release and probably a year after that until there are more than 2 games that support it. It'll be nice when it comes but it's miles down the road.

I'll have a whole new machine and windows 9 by then lol.gif the consoles will look feckin awful and by then Xbox One and Wii U will be as good as dead * +
