I forget the name of the YouTube downloader I have because I do not have my laptop with me, but all you need to do is Google YouTube downloader to find one. * +

Format factory, convert it to a different container/file type, that won't solve the problem but at least you may be able to view the vids you downloaded, try a different downloader and see if that helps, there's loads of addons for the popular browsers that will let you download straight from YouTube via browser instead of using a separate downloader like idm * +

See if there is an update to vlc as well, I had a similar problem till I updated a codec on my win7 desktop, I don't use vlc even if it does use it's own codecs I've always liked media player classic with the klite codec pack, I only check for a codec update if one breaks but that's easy to fix and doesn't bother me, especially as it rarely happens * +

Google 4 klite codec pack 640......the other packs seems to have bugs.....it will play anything on pc..... * +
