I've got 2 80gb HDD, they wouldn't show on boot list and both would click when trying to run, so yesterday I removed the boards from them and cleaned the contacts and voila, they boot and the clicking is gone! what I want to know is has anyone come across this and for how long did they work for? am using one now for games and useless stuff just to see how long it will take to die on me. * +

seems like a pcb problem then. your lucky as if it were a mechanical problem you could not fix it. * +

yes but ive thrown away a couple of HDDs coz i thought they where bust, this means just by cleaning the connecters you can add a few more years to them. * +

it has nothing to do with the lifetime if it had a small problem like that it depends on the other components. it might last you 5 even 8 years or just 1 if the pcb fries or it gets smacked and the arm hits the plattern lol *
