Bernie Eccleston has said he wants the rules changed back to how they were.for_sure.gif This could be in reaction to the bloke who owns Red Bull saying that he may withdraw from F1 completely as 'the sport no longer serves his companies needs'. or in other words 'We're not winning this year, so i'm taking my multi-million pound ball and going home to sulkcrybaby.gif.' * +

The losers are always going to moan. The Renault power unit presently is just cr*p, that's all. Everybody knew the rules were coming for 3 years, Mercedes spent their time and money on it over the old regs, and it's paying off. It's that simple.

Apparently the key to this is that Mercedes HPP engineered their turbocharger at the request of the works team to have the compressor mounted on the 'front' of the engine with a long s haft running between the vee of the cylinders from the turbine rather than have the compressor sat directly next to the turbine on the back of the engine as most turbochargers have.

So the compressor is much cooler and nearer the intake meaning more power and less lag, makes the intercooler smaller and intake piping shorter and lighter, that makes the packaging at the rear smaller for better aero, better aero means less drag and better cornering, less tyre problems yadda yadda benefits snowball * +

Mercedes high performance powertrains in Brixworth. Force India and Williams also use the same unit, however the works team have known about the engine for years and asked for the design to be as it is and integrate it better than anyone else. Just the advantage of being a works team, with he money and the aero that goes with it being better than any of the other Mercedes teams.

Bahrain was an engine limited circuit so you could see that the Mercedes runners had a big advantage. Force India scored their first podium in something like 5 years. They were driving past the Ferrari and Red Bulls easily because of the gap. * +

''Bernie says think before you drive '' signs facepalm

The huge 1 of these on turn 4 I think was quite disturbing... * +

Red bull look as though they have a great chassis with good aerodynamics but their power unit is so far behind. If Renault can improve it with some sneaky updates it'll be closer at the end of the season but at the moment Mercedes could romp home and win virtually every race as it stands barring reliability issues * +

Renaults problem is that power unit updates can only be for safety and reliability plus approves by the others. However these updates can still improve performance as a by product, sneaking around the rules so to speak. At the moment they probably won't be allowed to make up all of the gap but they will take any improvement they are allowed. Some minor improvements would make the red bull at least more competitive on the slower circuits. * +
