Bradford City had won the old 3rd division and were presented with their trophy before the home game against Lincoln so it was a big crowd for them. A fire broke out just before half time in a very old (largely wooden) main stand ignited by some source probably a discarded cigarette, which could have slipped underneath the stand onto accumulated junk underneath. The fire accelerated incredibly quickly out of control and engulfed the entire stand within just a few minutes. The roof collapsed and trapped many supporters because of the sheer speed it went up.

Very little coverage for this comparatively today....there were some very heroic actions by the fans that day trying to assist and save each other. 56 died. 54 Bradford fans, and 2 Lincoln fans. Hundreds of injuries.

Bradford's ground was rebuilt, in the shock Lincoln condemned virtually the entirety of Sincil Bank and spent a fortune at the time for a lower league side rebuilding the ground, although suffering successive relegations. Because of that day however Sincil Bank was one of the better lower division grounds after. * +
