in football what happens if a player is supposed to be substituted for another but the player gets red carded before they could leave the field as a result of walking too slowly off the field? Does the player who's supposed to come on still come on for a red carded player? *

The substitute hasn't happened until the replacement sets foot on the field. This is why a sub cannot officially go onto the field until the player on the pitch has crossed the white line. If the player that saw red saw it on the pitch, he's off and can't be replaced.

This has happened several times in the past. In particular one instance where the player was called off, but he took off his shirt on the field of play to run off. Got a second yellow for that offence, red card and sent off, sub could no longer happen. *
