in recovery mode on an s4... turn the fone off, then holding volume up and the power button wait for it to turn back on. THE INSTANT YOU SEE BLUE WRITING AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN let go of the buttons.
it should boot into recovery mode from there where you'll find the factory reset option. use the volume up and down to navigate thru the menu options and a short press on the power key to select/confirm the option... *
