Yes, the extremism of Islam, is a misrepresentation and an errant interpretation of the meaning of the scriptures.
Nearly one third of the worlds population professes Islam. If the Holy Qur'an literally taught the actions of these extremists the whole world would be up in flames...

It should be understood that verses from the Holy Qur'an are never meant to be taken out of context in both regards to the written scripture and the socio-historical context. Each verse or chapter deals directly with particular situations and circumstances that had arisen at at that particular time.
The Holy Qur'an is foremost a teaching of the mercy, compassion and forgiveness by God( Subhanna wa Ta'ala) for the whole of humanity. Another aspect is the emphasis on social justice for all members of the umaah, from the richest to the poorest including the first instance of women's rights promoting them to a level of equality that the rest of the world did not catch up for almost 1500 years. Along with social justice are the environmental and ecological teachings and, the teaching of fighting only in self defense. Alhumdulillah!
Extremism in all faiths have hijacked the same as the moderates within the same have refused to stand up and address the issue of radicalism and violence that have now become all too common place.
