Read Darwins book? Which one? If Darwin had such an effect on Stalin, why was he proponent of Lysenkoism? Do you think a book had more of an effect on Stalin's character than his 6 years at church school, or his 5 years as a seminarian? * +

Stalin lost his faith when he read the book and took it seriously not like many who still live by the commandments from the bible he actually believed there is no consequence. * +

Raised in the Georgian Orthodox faith, Stalin became an atheist. His government promoted atheism through special atheistic education in schools, anti-religious propaganda, the anti-religious work of public institutions (Society of the Godless), discriminatory laws, and a terror campaign against religious believers. By the late 1930s, it had become dangerous to be publicly associated with religion.[103]

Atheists aren't a group of people bound together by a set of beliefs or values. The only thing they have in common is a lack of belief in a god. Atheists can be good, bad, communist, capitalist, homophobic or tolerant and everything in between.

Unlike some of the main religions there are no violent beliefs in atheism (there are no beliefs at all) only violent individuals who may happen to be atheist along with their own set of individual values. * +

there is a consensus among historians that the later Soviet claim that Stalin read On the Origin of Species (1859) is not true, as the story fails on several obvious accountsWikipedia. * +

The attack on the Soviet Union in 1941 induced Stalin to enlist the Russian Orthodox Church as an ally to arouse Russian patriotism against foreign aggression. Russian Orthodox religious life experienced a revival: thousands of churches were reopened; there were 22,000 by the time Nikita Khrushchev came to power. The regime permitted religious publications, and church membership grew.' Wikipedia * +

Ppl have no problem saying the ones who burned and drowned witches etc to be the same folk in every other church to be the same. Just like the word christian is taken by many many different believing ppl. Some say they are christian because there parents were etc never really becoming a follower of Christ and His commandments. Its easy to paint them all with the same brush and not atheism? This topic is mainly directed at agressive atheism and those who fall in that gategory have much more in common than a lack in believing in God. I have atheist friends who dont care about darwinian evolution or anything else than there own life infront of them and they just dont care. They dont believe there is a God or afterlife either but they dont attack those who have hope in God just to show off a grudge. Atheists who have come out of christian influenced countries take it as granted that those morals are from themselves not the bible. Truth is the bible has mixed those morals into that society and is grown in without many noticing it. * +
