Ppl spoke in tongues in Biblical times as a sign that the Holy Spirit was movin them. Tongues weren't alota sounds n faintin tho. It was the actual language of the ppl they were preachin to, tho the speaker didn't kno that language b4. It was to get the msg of God across. * +

Tongues is the language of the holy spirit which is far deeper than we can know. Some people can interpret tongues into the person 12 language. Like anything tongues can be abused. You can usually tell who is faking it when you have been a christian a little while. Why would be people do that. Not all christians are sincere * +

paul is basically saying one can speak in unknown tongues but its better to have the gift of tongues so the church is edified thru interpretation and prophesy than an individual be edified thru unknown tongues. notice he did not command any one to stop speaking in unknown tongues. as a matter of fact he thanked GOD he spoke in tongues more than any of them. thats in vers 18 * +
