1 Timothy 3:2 actually says priests and bishops should have one wife. Being married was supposed to help keep on the straight and narrow. The prohibition against priests marrying only came about in later centuries, when the popes worried about priests leaving property and position to their children. This sort of anti-nepotism may sound reasonable, until you contemplate the origin of the word 'nepotism'.
