Going back to Genesis, Cain murdered Abel due to jealousy and hatred. Those two are some of the reasons why people murder. * +

Two particular reasons for murder spring to mind.

1) Solving a problem

2) Satisfying an emotion

Either can be mental illness long term or momentary, though the controlling of events the obvious motivation for the first, state of emotion such as fear or anger being more the second. *
