Look it up. It wasn't open support, they did it covertly. The Israeli gov't officially still denies it but retired senior Israeli intelligence officials have admitted that hey did it publicly. Essentially they wanted to destabilise the Palestinian authorities politically and halt the peace process that had been progressing under their then Fatah leadership. * +
