Come to think of it, drug use was pretty common place back in the Victorian era, even by the old Queen herself. Turns out she was a total junkie, her favourite tipple was a wine called Vin Mariani, made using coca(much like the original Coca-Cola was) and she used opium on a daily basis. You could still buy cocaine and heroin over the counter in well-to-do shops such as Harrods or Fortnum and Masons*, right up until the early 1900's.

* Both stores used to sell 'comfort packages' to send to british soldiers fighting in the trenches of WW1, they contained chocolate, tobacco, cocaine and morphine, plus a pipe, a syringe and needles. * +
