The thing I love about that movie is that they are all there for a reason. I have a theory about the math genius being a rival to ''Sasha'' (the Asian girl in the sequel who is the apparent mastermind behind the cube) and that's why she was dumped in there.
The escape artist was probably involved in creating traps for the cube. All of them were involved in the creation of the project in some way, even if it was unwittingly that they did so.. *
