Guys, I'm wondering if it's okay to develop close personal friendships with your co-workers?

So a new girl joined our office most recently, and the two of us h*t it off right away. Now I like to keep work and personal life separate. But with her, I feel totally okay and comfortable sharing personal stuff (and it's reciprocal)

We have gotten kinda close, and also started talking outside job. I vibe with her naturally. She's quite cool and open-minded. I told her I like gay s*x, and she was so supportive and understanding. I mean, I'm out to my other colleagues also. But with her, I could even share some of my dirty stories/secrets. I felt like Hannah Montana when she ripped her wig off. Certainly made work easier, and a lot less stressful. * +

Is it a good or bad idea to develop close personal friendships with your co-workers? The reason why I ask this is office politics. Workplaces are gossip centrals. Your co-workers could potentially stab you in the back, blame you for their own mistakes, leave the company and never stay in touch etc. So, I'm confused about this. How close should one get to co-workers? Do y'all have a bestie at work? * +

I don't think it matters where you form your close friendships, it's sexual relationships at work that are usually a potential problem * +

I got into my work via friends, and i socialised with them anyway. I was most comfortable there from the word go. The only job i ever had before was also one where i was even closer with them out of work - i even shared a house with my supervisor in that one.

But i guess it depends what you do. I could have family where i work. But i can imagine jobs where that'd be a nightmare!

Over the years there have been a couple of girls interested. Putting my humble down, actually a few. My fair share, i should say. And that's where i've drawn the line. I still work with someone i fancied, and it seemed mutual, but i felt it too risky - not that the job was a risk to the relationship, oh no, more that failure of a relationship would cause problems with the job. And relationships.. they all failed.. so, no.

But proper friendships are fine. * +

scariest staff interactions I've seen was between two women in the customer service staff room.

one woman was talking about another to the whole room as if she wasn't there. calling her a whore tart and variations on that theme. to be fair she had done a few porn films. * +
