Ok what was before modern man, homo erectus or neandertal man i guess and how long ago was that about half a million years ago? so how come us men still have hairy arses to this day? am i been silly in thinking we are evolving at a slow pace otherwise why in this day and age do we still need hair in places we dont. * +

Well, shave it, and see if you miss it. If you don't then you've proven it isn't needed. If you do, then you'll see why we still have it. * +

Nobody can really be sure anymore. There was a dig in a cave in Eastern Europe, and guess what? If the carbon dating can be believed, we were all living side by side. * +

I'd say Homo erectus is right before Homo sapiens/modern man, who've supposedly been around 400 000 years. Dated back to first fossilized modern man teeth. * +
