Yes, that SA director (District 9) had to put off his ''possible alternate universe storyline branching off from Aliens'' movie because Ridley Scott wanted to put this out first. * +

Alien 5 is a continuation of Alens where Ripley never died and Newt is older, it bypasses Alien 3 and 4.
Never liked 3 anyways and 4 wasn't bad. * +

Ah, so.. do we know why Weaver wanted to kill off her character in Aliens 3?

From what I have heard she knew that they wanted to meld the Predator/Alien Universes (like they did eventually) She didn't want her character involved in this and, so the story goes, she killed off Ripley. * +

Not sure, I do know that Ridley Scott is producing Alien 5 and that he doesn't want it shut down or anything.
David Fincher made his director debu doing Alien 3 and his hands were tied by the studio and he actually hates it.
