Some people pull away because of fear. They're scared of getting hurt, scared of hurting someone and, even, scared of things actually working out.
Everyone's lives have been shaped by their relationships. All of them. Parents, siblings, teachers, friends, lovers. And some of these relationships were not healthy. They caused pain and shame or guilt. It's very common for people to take past traumas and make that a part of their core beliefs.
The problem is, when they are faced with a different type of relationship, these old core beliefs rear up and can cause damage.
When someone is willing to make changes in their core beliefs they can love themselves. Only when we love ourselves can we fully love another.
It sounds like your partner has something's he might need to talk to someone about. Be supportive and understand he may not be ready, and that's O.K.
It is not your job to save him and it is perfectly healthy to limit the time you want to stand beside him while he saves himself.

We often want everything to stay the same, but feelings fade and people
change. There are people who we think will be in our lives forever that become
distant memories of our past. Do not fret. Feelings fading, and people
changing is a part of life, and if you are growing as a person, not everyone will
grow with you. You dont have to forget your past, instead learn from it and use
this wisdom to choose the people who will surround you in the future grin

This. Well said peta! * +
