Thanks to you all who have tried to help. Finally got the problem sorted. New battery, new starter, new distributor and all is fine now but really would have liked to know what the prob was. * +

VW hot start issue. It's a design flaw with the engines and carbs. All you can do is overpower it as you have done, better battery and fresh starter *
