When you buy a phone brand new you can skip all settings so I don't see the problem * +

Yes when its new, or if you have done a factory reset, but I don't have that option cos he will then loose his photos which are on the phone storage * +

I can do a factory reset by holding in volume up, power and home key all at the same time, but then his photos will be history. (As far as I know that works on all galaxy smartphones) * +

Plug it into a laptop?? This is why the cloud is great but certain people cough cough polo bang on about internal storage * +

good news ive managed to recover 139 of his photos so far with kies. kies also says there is an update (probably 2.36?) just got to charge the phone up a bit more before it will allow me to do the update * +

if it's asking for a google account upon boot, it's most likely already been wiped and his photos destroyed... * +
