what ? renaming a file obviously doesn't do anything to convert it from one format to another, mkv's are matroska format and still will be after you've changed the extension.

buying a new TV doesn't constitute much of a trick in most people's books either, your TV must have partial matroska support... * +

There's more that hasn't pasted but you get the idea. The video data is an AVC stream, and the audio is AC-3. Changing the file extension, or the container, doesn't change the video or audio, both those streams can be used in .mp4 and that is why it still plays. * +

You can remux those files btw and do it properly. No converting and it takes a few seconds. * +
