google say 4.4 is less demanding on hardware and also takes up less space on the device, so an alltogether smaller footprint. its also designed to run on older or less capable devices and will run quite happily on 512mb of ram. google hopes this will encourage gingerbread users to upgrade, even if they have to go 3rd party by routing or using projects like AOKP, AOSP OR CYANOGENMOD. because obviously devices running on 2.3 will never get an official update to kitkat from the manufacturer, and google wont help there either. * +

as google seem so intent on getting people off 2.3 you would have thought they would provide assistant in doing so, especially when you consider not everyone has the same level of knowledge. * +
