Just swapped an HTC desire for this. its unlocked but the question is canister still update the firmware or will it mess up the unlock? * +

unlikely but it may depend on how the handset was originally purchased. whether is was bought sim free or tied to a network, either on pay as you go or contract. You could enquire with samsung. But I do know you have to be carefull about updating smartphones that were originally on the 3 network, but don't the galaxy S was ever on 3 anyway. * +

flashing has nothing to do with unlocking, go for it. * +

no not usually, although I do recall updating the software on my nokia 6680 back in the day, that had been on the 3 network and I got it unlockled. But after flashing the phone it was locked again to the 3 network much to my frustration lol. Guess the system knew that from the imei number. * +

It's fine I'm with virgin and flashed to the jellybean official from Poland and it still picks up the same network, as long as its an official for the s3 it's fine * +
