Yep, you could try not going into chat.. 
Only joking - try using one of the Opera Mini mods that allow you to set a variable refresh rate. You can get Opera Mini 2.06 here: http://two.xthost.info/garion/opera206.jar To setup the refresh when you're on a wap page go to: 'menu/navigation/auto reload' and input your desired refresh interval in seconds. * +

That's my fault, I do apologize, I pasted it using Mini 5.1 which has a copy paste bug which inserts spaces - I'll convert the link and post back, in the meantime you could try entering it without spaces, but bear with me and I'll be back with an accurate shorter link. * +
