Wi-Fi security used to be low or non-existent because people used Wi-Fi routers without password or with poor settings. GSM phones and GSM modems (like dongles) used to be difficult to eavesdrop without very expensive equipment. The encryption of GSM is very weak though. Equipment needed is now affordable even for teenagers so GSM is in no way as secure as it used to be. GPRS is add-on to GSM. * +

Not only can GPRS be eavesdroped it's just a matter about port assigned to another WAP phone to send and receive data at the other phone owner's expense. Phone company are aware of this and there exist technical means to prevent this (if they so choose). Within few years GSM has to upgraded to prevent widespread abuse. * +

As some ppl have said, gsm encryption can now be cracked. But 3G and hsdpa are *very* secure. So if you use a 3G/hsdpa dongle, you do not need to worry about crooks eavesdropping. However this applies only to the dongle: there may be other insecurities if you have conventional wifi equipment. I saw that someone said you need a firewall: but that is true only if you have services (like ssh, ftp, a web server and so on) running on yr computer. If you have no ports open, you dont need a firewall. U * +
