3 is ok. Tariffs depends wot u want. Cos they do mix an match on contracts. And i pay 5 quid a month 4 wap. But there restrictions is a pain on certain site's * +

They offer 5 pound a month browsing (1 gig but you can simply buy another add on if you use it up), and calls/texts can be as little as 3.5 min/each depending on how much you want to top up. I have had far less trouble with 3 than I ever had with o2 or orange. Site restrictions easily bypassed using Opera Mini and it has proved an absolute bargain for me with no serious issues. * +

As with all networks coverage is going to depend upon where you live, but just spend a fiver on a sim and try it for a month

If you've got an unlocked phone then give them a try, like jscott said it's only a pound for a sim on ebay (or Amazon) and you get 10 quid free credit if you port your number (you can use an unwanted sim for that). * +

Its 2gb data allowence for 5 pound a month not 1. 3g coverage could be better but thats my only complaint about 3 * +
