Theres a cool new feature on Google Mobile Maps - it tells you your (approximate) location, obviously based on which transmitter you are using. Ive seen similar services offered by the network before... but now its being used by a 3rd party (google). Doesnt this mean its possible to create an application that can find other peoples location??? * +

any such app always gives the user the option to reveal or dont reveal their location. Prime example location tagger or nokia chat. * +

There's more than one conceivable way to obtain information about location of mobile phone. WAP specifications has for years had an interface to connect to location services (or other stuff) using built-in browser (without downloading any J2ME application). If it's a location service then it could be a self-contained GPS-unit inside phone, or it could be network based. It will depend on each phone * +

It will depend on each phone what interface is implemented but once the phone user allows WML-browser to access such an interface then the WAP site may have coded for this information to be sent to them. Such interface can be reached without using WAP too. Making a phone call to an emergency service may automatically access a location service interface and forward information to recipient of call. * +

The networks have always been able to locate phones. What concerns me is that a 3rd party app can do it now. That means a secret 3rd party can do so too. * +
