Looking for information on a topic in general then it's time to change the search keywords if not finding interesting pages within first 50-100 search results. On the other hand, if looking for all pages at a site (or all pages with certain criteria) then it may need thousands of results. I've read somewhere that Google's limit is 1000 search results (for computers) but I've not encountered it. * +

Google sometimes blocks users long time before any number limit is reached if they suspect it's a robot making the searches. As for your need for random pages then there's sites for computers where people can leave interesting URLs. You may find all links of a certain poster usefull, or you may just jump around. The concept may be used for wap too. *
