I was shocked to read in a magazine today that the uk networks are gonna shut down gsm by june 2008. They say they that the 3g licenses have cost them so much its no longer viable for them to keep gsm up and running. But there are still many phones that are not 3g compatable like the samsung uc600 as but one example. 3g coverage is skant in some areas how can they do this to us? * +

Its just crazy and totally without respect. Some people dont even like 3g cos it reduces battery life of your phone. Not everyone wants to download music, stream videos or make video calls. Some people just wanna text and talk. If they do this it may create chaos for business men when they stray outside 3g coverage. It could loose businesses time and money. * +

It could revert mobile phone coverage to what is was like in the 1990's. Many areas will have little or no coverage. Despite this the networks insist that by june next year 3g coverage will have improved enough to prevent this situation. But what of the thousands of people with non 3g phones in the uk? Or even millions? * +

Do they honestly expect people to bin totally good phones? And does this mean manufacturers are gonna withdraw current non 3g phones from the uk shops? * +

Vodafone say people faced a simular situation when they switched the old analogue service off. But there are a lot more people with mobile phones now than what there were when analogue was switched off. A repeat of history? * +
