Servers, computers and mobile phones access internet through addresses that at called IP-addresses. However, people usually enter domain names (like prodigits.co.uk) when using the Internet. The various DNS (located around the world) is connected to databases containing the IP-addresses of domains in use. A domain name is of no use until the owner of the domain has access to a server and the IP-address has been entered into the DNS system. If a DNS does not have a record of a domain in it's database then it call another DNS (one layer up) to check if there is an entry. Sometimes various DNS are delivering different results (if this is due to hackers than you can be lead to a false website). * +

In computers (and some mobile phones) there is two entries (primary and secondary) for DNS servers to be be used when connecting to the Internet. These entries simply contains the IP-addresses of the DNS, there's no domain name involved for these. There is also local DNS system for use within computer but that is another matter. * +

Websites can be called without using the domain name by entering only IP-address but this will not always work. As an example: if an IP-address is used for five different domains that are served from the same server (or computer) then the server would need to know which one of the five domains you are trying to call. If no domain is called then the server may or may not use one of them as default. * +
