Seriously though, @poster, I believe that the most common reason for locking a topic is if it's largely informative, like pop3 settings and opera links, and people constantly adding to the topic with questions or random conversations make the info you need harder to find. * +

the case described by garion would only be a temp lock for people to understand the use of forums and the proper channels for such conversations such as chat forum, pop-up's and inboxes. * +

topics locked on permanent basis are where there is no further information to add. For example postin in wrong forum. Poster is advised, post is locked. Information only posts etc. * +

or posts that totally drift away from topic matter but has some needed info so post is locked but not removed. * +
