EDGE stands for 'Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution' I don't know why suddenly. Maybe they recently enabled EDGE coverage in your area or maybe you changed settings on your phone unknowingly. * +

Whats also possible is that the EDGE signal in your area is weak so it connects via EDGE only sometimes. * +
