go through your who added you, you can click on the names and do exactly the same as if they were on your bud list, ie pop, inbox etc, from there you'll be able to see who's online and therefore missing on your list * +

Try wot djducky said. But sometimes it counts Twi as a bud. When my buds go invisible theyre not counted as 'online' tho. * +
