just got a 250gb ssd for this laptop. rather than doing a clean installation of Windows 7 I cloned the hard drive. I thought it would be less wear on the drive than a new installation but my mate thinks I should have done a clean installation. I could still do that but that would mean formatting the drive which I assume would put a lot of stress on it. Win 7 has set itself up with the new drive but am I getting the max performance this way? should I format and start again? would that be better f * +

would that give me better performance? or would the re-writing be best avoiding? its a Samsung SSD which are highly rated. iam not bothered about starting again if its advisable. any help would be appreciated. I use a program called kill disk to blank drives that claims to wipe the drive to military standards, which maybe too much for an SSD? also should you use CCleaner or jetclean with an SSD? since ive been using these on the standard drive I havnt needed to defragment. and I know defragmenting isnt recommended for SSD drives * +

that leads me to believe that using these tools would not be good for an SSD? laptop specs are core i5 m560 which I think is 1st gen? 4gb ram and now a 25Ogb SSD. I use it for work. * +

You just need to check the alignment is correct [link]http://www.overclock.net/t/1226963/how-to-properly-re-align-your-ssd-hdd-partitions[/link] * +

Windows 7 wont defrag an SSD, it will just send the TRIM command. You can still use tools to clean the registry. * +

thanks newt182 so you don't think iam loosing any performance providing its set up properly? its my first ssd. thanks I will check that link out. Just out of curiosity would you have cloned or opted for a clean install? See what concerned me with a clean install is not only the installation but also the installation of the hundreds of windows 7 updates that come with a clean install cos it goes back prior to the service pack! sounds like torture for an ssd lol. Even after service pack there are still hundreds more updates. * +

(I only know that cos I've done hundreds of clean installs of windows 7 on all sorts of machines. guess cos it goes back to the 2009 release date) * +

I bought a bigger SSD just a few weeks ago and cloned my old one to it. I'm glad I did and didn't have to bother with a clean install. * +
