Is it possible to install and run windows 7 on a sata HD. It was an external portable 2.5 drive and since my ancient pc still has small sized ide I thought I can use this external as an internal sata drive. I managed to install windows and apps. But upon rebooting just a black screen. I thought it was because it was partitioned into 2. Any ideas or tips? * +

Go into the BIOS and rearrange the boot priority and make your 2.5'' drive first. * +

I did and it did boot about once or twice as i was still installing drivers and apps i frequently used. I just thought that perhaps since the drive is partitioned into two thats why it could be not seeing the partition to boot from. I have now made the entire drive into one single drive. a few 400mb's though are unallocated. Will try reinstall again and see what happens. Theoretically it should work. Fingers crossed it does. If it fails then i use it as a scratch disk. * +

How ancient is this pc? Is the old internal hdd still there n connected? Did windows show the external as drive C? Have you mounted it properly in the case or left as is and just put it inside? * +

pc is not thaaaat ancient. but its a good ol pentium 4. I didn't put the drive in an enclosure. I just put it in the pc via sata. gets picked up fine. and I even removed all other IDE drives except cd drive for windows installation. I will try it again now and give feedback. Installation was not the problem but the fact that after a few reboots it showed black screen at starting windows stage and remains that way for ever. * +

Is it just a completely blank black screen? Doesn't say anything after post at all? I'm starting to think its something simple, like jumper settings, loose cable etc, or possibly sata drivers * +

if it was xp I'd understand. as with that sata drivers have to be installed but not win7. and yest after post it was not showing anything. just a blank screen. I reinstalled after a slight hiccup. changed non raid to raid in bios. I'm yet to restart and see if it will. busy with the one dreary thing after every install. installing apps and setting up settings etc. anyone know of a working app that can backup and restore the image of a bootable partition? * +

Sorry meant those as an example. Tbh newt is far better with hardware problems than me, and yes i pretty convinced its hardware as im assuming you only had this problem after installing said hard drive. He'll probably have a better idea as to what's wrong hopefully. * +
