you can also buy a neodymium magnet which will wipe the hard disk in a second. * +

A hammer works better, magnetic fields are tricky little devils and HDD cases will cause little toroids to form in magnetic fields. Thus, you can never be sure that you wiped out 100 percent of the information on an HDD when you use a magnet. * +

a neodymium magnet will definitely wipe it if you cover the whole disk with it. they're immensely strong. * +

Is it round? If so, it already has a toroid of a non-magnetic field. * +

yes it's round but so long as you move it back and forth across the surface of the disk, those tiny tiny iron filings will all stand up and then all your bits are 1, disk. wiped. * +

Iron, in a hard drive? (facepalm)

Platters are typically made using an aluminium or glass and ceramic substrate. In disk manufacturing, a thin coating is deposited on both sides of the substrate, mostly by a vacuum deposition process called magnetron sputtering. The coating has a complex layered structure consisting of various metallics, commonly a cobalt alloy. *
