I reinstalled windows 7 on a hard drive that was formally a slave drive making it master and after jumping all the hoops it installs fine and i can reinstall and set up all my apps however when i restart the pc it boots to a black screen. Safe mode has it hanging at classpnp.sys. Anyone know what the issue may be or how to resolve it? My 2nd HDD boots windows 7 fine and only difference between the two is that this 2nd HDD has a reserved portion for system files. think thats what mucking up everything * +

I wiped it again and reinstalled windows 7 and it restarted fine the first time round. 2nd round I changed one tiny option in bios for it to boot from HDD first and not DVD and alas it boots to a black screen. shows start windows normally and even safe mode option but no options lead anywhere, have tried fixmbr, fixboot, system restore everything. I'm at a loss for options. Both my drives are IDE and only thing else connected is a dvd writer. No sata drives. Also no weird beeps, Both HD's seem fine. but its the 2nd bigger one that i want to use as a primary drive. * +

Try changing sata mode in bios. * +

even though i'm using IDE and not SATA. Also the options under sata is raid or non raid. That's it. * +

Well just try, won't hurt. Also do you need that reserved partition? You could run 'sfc /scannow' and 'chkdsk C: /r' from startup repair, could be bad sectors too.. * +

checked and no bad sectors. Before everything when installing windows 7 it had told me due to BIOS I may not be able to boot from this HDD. But i bypassed that by installing windows xp and before it had gone far i stopped and installed windows 7 after wiping the HDD. I'm using it as a slave for now till I can figure a workaround. * +

get a copy of diagnostic tools for disk, depending from what brand disk is, and run disk test,
most likely there is something wrong with disk, but windows 7 wont show you that,
as windows 7 doesnt containt reliable test for HDDs * +

so you dont think its an installation problem @metulj. Coz it boots up fine teh first time round. Its only after i just change the boot order to have HDD boot first instead of the DVD drive that it refuses to boot even into safe mode getting stuck at classpnp.sys. Furthermore changing it back doesnt change anything, I'll see what test disk apps i find and use them however disk is working perfectly but as a slave. * +
